The Inside Story of Dunlopillo Talalay Latex

All Latex Is Not The Same

The latex manufactured by the state-of-the-art "Talalay" process (named after its inventor Leon Talalay) at Dunlopillo Limited in Pannal UK, has long been widely regarded as the finest type of latex available.

Latex Production Process

1. Hermetic Mould Process

Natural latex and its necessary additives (vulcanising and gelling agents, anti oxidants etc.) are beaten up into a homogeneous foamy state. The foam is then placed into a Hermetic Mould which is air tight sealed. The mould is partly filled depending on the required hardness of the latex. This mould is equipped with thousands of pins with their main purpose being to transfer heat to the centre of the latex core.

2. Vacuum Extraction Process

Once the foam is sealed, 'vacuum extraction' takes place. This causes the air cells, surrounded by latex, to expand and form a 'round cell structure' which gives the latex its load bearing properties.

3. Freezing Process

After vacuum extraction, the temperature is quickly dropped to minus 30C. This causes the cell membranes to partly break open forming an 'open cell structure'. The freezing process protects the open cell structure during the next phase of production.

4. Gelling Process

By blowing a mixture of CO2 and air through this frozen latex substance, it begins so gel (so it will no longer collapse). The temperature is also slowly raised to complete the gelling process. This heat acts to 'vulcanise' the product before it is thoroughly washed and dried.

In summary, the Talalay process is not dictated by a chemical reaction but relies on a far more precise production process to deliver superior resilience, consistency and comfort.

The genuine Talalay process latex blocks and pillows are exported to over 60 countries around the world. Compared to the original Dunlop process latex used by other manufacturers who are unable to access the more advanced Talalay process technology, the unique uniform open cell structure of the genuine Dunlopillo "Talalay" process latex ensures:

  • Superior resilience and durability
  • Enhanced ventilation and breathability
  • Greater strength
  • Better performance

Unlike many other manufacturers of latex, all Dunlopillo Talalay process latex blocks and pillows are thoroughly washed and dried to remove impurities.
